Cataract Evaluation – What to Expect

Before scheduling Cataract Surgery, you’ll need to undergo a Cataract Evaluation with one of our cataract specialists. The evaluation is quite extensive and can take anywhere from 2-3 hours.

The Front Desk will ask that you complete registration paperwork at check-in and obtain copies of your insurance cards and your photo ID. To complete this paperwork in advance, visit our Patient Resources webpage.

A technician will perform the Refraction piece of the exam to determine your current visual status. A thorough examination will then be conducted by the surgeon to determine if you’re a good candidate for Cataract Surgery. If so, he/she will discuss your visual goals, possible outcomes and risks associated with surgery, and answer any questions you may have. Your physician will discuss your lens options and inform you if you’re a candidate for Premium Vision Options. Additional testing is performed following the exam to determine the power of the lens implant for surgery.

You will have the opportunity to meet with our specialty trained Surgery Schedulers to choose a surgery date and go through pre and post-op instructions. They will be able to answer any remaining questions you may have as well.

Insurance Coverage

Most insurance companies cover a portion of the cost of standard cataract surgery. Although the procedure is likely billable to your insurance, it is the patient’s responsibility to pay any deductibles, co-pays, coinsurance and any remaining amount that insurance does not cover. It is the patient’s responsibility to contact their insurance company and know their deductibles, surgery co-pay and covered benefits. If you upgrade to a Premium Vision Option (which is not covered by insurance), any additional fees will be collected on the day of surgery.

Financing Options

Minnesota Eye Consultants offers a variety of programs and payment plans to make the cost of vision care easy and manageable. When considering the investment of Premium Vision Options for cataract surgery, it is important to also consider your ongoing investment for contacts and glasses to get a better idea of the cost-comparison over your lifetime. Whether you are paying cash, using a Flexible Spending Account, or taking advantage of the financing options we offer, our upgraded plans can be quite affordable. Our Surgery Schedulers will be happy to answer any questions about how to make your dream of better vision a reality.
